Painting the Norwegian Fjords

Threshold – oil on birch panel, 30 x 30cm

Sometimes I’ll begin a painting without knowing what direction it will take me in. Intuitively it will begin to take a form, then shapes and colours suggest a landscape of sorts.

In this case it soon became apparent that my thoughts had turned to a trip that I took to Norway last summer. It had been a long held dream of mine to visit the Norwegian fjords and I can honestly say that they were everything and more that I’d hope they would be.

The larger than life landscape and the towering scale of fractured rock left a lasting impression on me, one that I hope to return to in life and in my paintings in the future.
